Scoble’s new venture launched recently . . . Pot meet the kettle: scottO rips Groundspeak for its less than courteous customer service. I truly wonder what he thinks the perception of Terracaching.com’s customer service is . . . Ed Morrissey’s When the Democratic Party moves too far left for George McGovern, you know they’re in trouble made me spray my computer screen . . . It’s interesting that the guy who got me into geocaching is also now blogging . . . much ado is being made out of John McCain’s reaction to NY Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller. That isn’t anger to me and I have no issue with his response. It was a silly question he was asked and he let her know it . . . ’twas just reminded that I will be at Yankee Stadium in June for a game. It is the last season for the House That Ruth Built . . . gearing up for lawn care as I dropped the mower and edger off for service today . . . “Oh, get over it!” You have to love Scalia . . . from an e-mail I received earlier this week: “I hope all the bastards who got those no-money-down loans do get thrown out of their houses.” . . . completing classroom book orders online is wonderful. No longer do I have to fill out those dreaded forms and mail them in. We’ll see how quickly they arrive . . . California now requires parents who homeschool their children to have teaching certs. Ha! or should that be Bah! Sure, force parents to be indoctrinated in the system they want to be rid of. That makes sense . . . More spewage: “Adam Eaton is picking up right where he left off last season — getting pummeled like Apollo Creed in the beginning of Rocky IV” . . . I came across this (don’t ask how).  The more I see of stuff like this, the more I am sympathetic to celebrities.  I think they give up some of their personal lives as the trade off of stardom, but this kind of stuff is ridiculous . . . a good chuckle . . . Wow!  Reading a book is considered “racial harassment” . . .

Four Min Hourglass

Four Min Hourglass

After some caching today I decided to pull over and play a little Wherigo. When I loaded this cartridge I saw it could be played at home. I saved it for later and played a different one then.

After logging the caches and organizing the seemingly endless photographs, I decided to call up this cartridge.

I recognize the puzzle, although I have used different numbers previously. I jotted down my plan. Unfortunately, my plan was flawed. Yikes! I made the adjustment and re-played the cartridge and happily timed four minutes.

Thank you for the cartridge. I appreciate futzing with these.

I am not certain how much this has to do with location or a GPS, but at this point in the game I am not terribly concerned. It is good to have cartridges to play to work through some of the conceptual stuff and this one does just that!

A Vegas Riddle

A Vegas Rddle

I played this cartridge this afternoon after doing some caching. Not having read what was needed I looked for an open space thinking that may be needed. I pulled into a public school I used to teach at and drove around back. I read the preamble and got started.

Apparently I am not a good judge of 100 feet as I ended up with some of the casinos on the other side of the fence. Sigh . . . only me. :)

It didn’t take too long to solve this. At first I didn’t realize I needed to select the person too. I was just dropping off luggage. I would never make a good limo driver.

I played and enjoyed the little logic puzzle. Once I was done I was unsure if I needed to do anything else or not.

Thanks for the fun.

This cartridge was more interesting than the tutorial was.

Wherigo Player Tutorial

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Yesterday I received a Garmin Colorado 400t in the mail. I had fun all evening setting it up, loading files, and learning about this new unit. Today I had the pleasure of using it for real.

Excited to try out Wherigo, I played the first player tutorial on my lunch break on the school’s playground. I knew from reading about this cartridge that it was a real basic game so I wasn’t expecting much. That was good because there wasn’t much there. Nevertheless, I played and completed the game in short order.

I found some of the directions confusing and I am still learning the menu system on the Garmin, so that affected how smooth I was in giving items, collecting, etc.

And of course, I am not a gamer and never have been. I can see that there will be different genres of cartridges and those that are heavy into the role playing will likely not be my favorite.

I attempted to upload my saved game to Wherigo.com as part of my log, but I received an error each time I did so. It appears that the file is corrupted somehow.

Looking into it I am not certain why. I have two cartridges of the same game loaded on Rocky. I played the one named Wherigo Tutorial. I have a feeling this is an earlier version of the cartridge. I also have one named Wherigo Player Tutorial, which is the current name of this cartridge. I wonder if I played an older version of the cartridge and that is why it could not be uploaded. Even so, I was able to log that I played the cartridge.

I anticipate working through the other play anywhere cartridges soon. I hope to have a smoother interaction with them as I learn this new game.
