Memorial Service

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Today was Sharon’s memorial service. It didn’t help to understand. Perhaps others felt better because of it; I am not certain we can sign on to that.

The church was packed. There was at least one other geocacher in attendance. Lots of friends. Lots of sadness.

Too bad an event like this could not keep the press or the politicians away.

We miss Sharon. May your great smile light up heaven.

Trying to Understand

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Gert and I are trying to get a grip on the murder of our friend.  We are at a loss for explanations.

I spoke with a good friend of mine who is a very close friend of Sharon’s and lives two houses away. She, unfortunately, heard the shots.  No answers there.

Sharon’s daughter attends the same dance studio that Beetle does. Beetle’s class is immediately before hers.  Gert and Sharon talk during the changeover. Gert spoke with her again on Saturday. Sharon seemed very happy and given the recent changes in her life, she had reason to be.

I have read Rabbi Kushner’s When Bad Things Happen to Good People several times.  I wrote in my review of the book at aNobii:

I have read this several times, including high school and college. The use of a tapestry as the explanation of why bad things happen to us is by far the most moving explanation I have ever read.

This is a must read!

The premise of the book is that as mere mortals, humans cannot see God’s plan for us.  He likens this to viewing a tapestry.  When one is up-close-and-personal, we do not see the beauty of the tapestry.  It is only when we can step back and see the entire tapestry that we see how the pattern fits and works.

According to Kushner, as humans we do not have the vantage point to see how all the events fit into God’s plan.

That may be, but it is inconceivable as to how such evil has any place in God’s plan.  What good can come out of this?  Mother is dead.  Father will never see the light of day.  Two children not only lost their parents, but witnessed the gory details.  The four-year old was in her car seat and left there afterwards.  That is part of God’s plan?!?

Fuck you, Shanley!

Tears for Sharon

Monday, February 4th, 2008

This morning has been a mess.  I was told to read the local paper.

Sharon was a friend of mine.  I taught with her for years.

There is evil in this world and it displayed itself in Vineland yesterday.  May God have mercy.

Illegal Immigration Hits Close to Home

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

It is no secret that Cumberland County, New Jersey is replete with illegal aliens. Many of these folks are hard-working migrant farm hands. Yet, many are not.

Randy Lopez-Rivas is not. Lopez-Rivas entered the United States illegally from Guatemala. He settled in Vineland.

Today Lopez-Rivas was arrested in Camden after having been spotted at the bus station.

What was his crime? Last night, his girlfriend, another illegal alien from Mexico, arrived home to find Lopez-Rivas missing. So was her three-month old daughter. The baby was found shortly after the police arrived at the scene:

A further search of the basement turned up the grisly discovery. The baby was wearing a pink singlet, her body shrouded in a white trash bag.

This heinous act would have never happened had our laws been respected. Now what happens? For you amnesty folks, this is what we see that prevents us from just permitting anyone to come in.
