The Chisholm Trail was a wagon trail used to drive cattle from Texas to Kansas where the railroads would ship the cattle east.
The Chisholm Trail began in San Antonio and ended in Abilene. It was not a straight trail, but rather a network of feeder trails that fed into other branches. The trail was extended beyond Abilene to Wichita and then all the way to Caldwell.
This Chisholm Trail marker is located in Wichita.

Because the order of the shutterspots reversed due to the time, I was in the midde of DC when I began to go north. I had expected to be in Virginia. That would have allowed me to hit the The Lonesome Crowded Forest cache. Coming up through the city, it was just too time-consuming to go west. I had to abandon that swing and just concentrate on working my back to New Jersey.
I snaked along and found this easily enough. I enjoy markers like this one. Interestingly, someone named Eric had a party there today. On the back of the property is this statue. I thought it was interesting.

Last December I was excited to find Markeroni.com. This site chronicles one’s visits to historical markers. I like these markers and come across many in my travels.
One of the compelling things about the site is the Challenge. The Challenge is a personal challenge to log 25, 50, or 100 markers during the year, whichever one selects. Joining so late in the year, I only opted for the 25 marker challenge, which I completed. I received a patch and a pin for my efforts . . . and the $15 fee.
I signed up for the 2006 Challenge as well. I have logged 26 so far, but none since June. And I do not think I will continue.
I probably have visited 100 markers this year and have documentation to submit. The reason for not doing so is that it is so cumbersome to log them. There was a re-design to address some of this, but it doesn’t seem to have gotten better. Apparently, if I am willing to purchase something, I can get around the stumbling block, but I am not willing to do so.
The issue is that unlike geocaches, for instance, the database is not populated with all the markers. Understandably, there is no way for it to have every marker. So, when I find a marker in New Jersey, I have to request that it be added to the database. I have to provide information about it, someone has to manually enter it, then I am notified, and I can log it. That is inefficient.
If one can point to a set of markers they can all be entered, but I tend to find one here, one there, etc.
So, I end up having to request these be entered, wait, and get back to it. It’s more work than I desire to put into this activity. Markers I find will be detailed in this blog for one-stop shopping.

I accidentally found this marker today. As I drove south on 29 out of Trenton, I pulled over to snap some photographs for a shutterspot. Where I pulled over had this plaque.

Ol’ number nine is stepping back into the batter’s box. This is the third plate appearance for him today beginning with a single and then a double.
His team has knocked around the starting pitcher and they have gotten to the bullpen of the opposing team. The bases are loaded. Bob settles in.
The relief pitcher winds up and delivers the pitch.
*Smack!*
Bob drills the ball to the right field corner. A slow-footed outfielder chases the ball as the even slower-footed Bob rounds second. The throw is slightly off line and Bob slides in huffing a puffing. This is the first triple he has seen in a loooooooooong time. But that’s another three RBIs for Bob.
Lucy the Elephant is a National Historic Landmark.
I first logged Lucy as the I Love Lucy virtual on 28 July 2002. The log is no longer online as none of my finds from caches posted on GC.com are. Looking back at the cache page, I recall that I had just come from the Sand in My Shoes cache in AC that LIJ had there. Lynn had found that right before me.
Lucy next appeared on my GPS screen for Mathlener’s Elephant Love scavenger hunt that I completed on 8 January 2006.
More recently, vorticity posted the Zippy the Pinhead scavenger hunt. Lucy showed up there yet again.
In addition to these three, Lucy has been used as a Markeroni too. Although looking just now, it appears I have not actually posted my log. Hmm . . . I have lots of markers to catch up on these days.
