When Idols Speak
Monday, October 15th, 2007In my CD changer in the truck right now is David Crosby’s Voyager. Voyager is a three-disc compilation of Crosby’s career. The first two discs showcase studio versions of his most notable songs; disc three provides some live versions of some songs. I would have enjoyed having He Played Real Good for Free. I guess since it’s a Joni Mitchell song, it didn’t make the cut.
I am a big fan of Crosby’s music and voice. While Neil Young was always my favorite, Crosby’s voice is magical. The first time I heard him live was right before he went to jail. He was not in good physical condition at the time, but he belted Delta that smothered the Allentown audience.
I shook hands with David after the acoustic show at the Tower in 1987. This was the tour right after jail. Again, his voice was perfect. I went on to see him many times over the next several years.
Then there was a gap. Much to my joy, Neil decided to tour with his old chums again in 2000 and I was right there. The CSN&Y shows were my dream concerts and I was happy to have seen them. Nevertheless, the dream ended there and I passed on the subsequent tours, including last year’s Freedom of Speech tour.
Crosby’s voice may be magical, but his politics are bent.
Tonight he and his longtime musical partner Graham Nash were guests on Hardball. Both are against the war in Iraq. I have no problem with that. But watch the video below. Is it really suggested that the Catholic Church should kowtow to public opinion?
If the people in America are against the war, the churches of America need to get in line and stand up for what we believe in.
Unbelievable! Truly unbelievable.
I was taught (and it seems to me this week’s homily stated as much) that we need to listen to the Word of God and to believe in the teachings of Christ. I’ll have to drop off the latest Gallup Poll to Fr. Paul so he can decide how he should preach next week.
Then Nash chimes in with:
Doesn’t the Church need some good publicity right now?
What kind of church would it be if the Word of God was pushed aside to preach what we want?
