When I lived in Boston, I read a lot of John Irving. I think I had read all of his books save Setting Free the Bears. I have not read a one since. Hmmm . . .
Anyhow, without question my favorite of his books was A Prayer for Owen Meany. It was very spiritual and so well-written. I have recommended to many people over the years.
So here I am 17 years removed from Irving, after midnight, flipping through On Demand to find something to watch. I came across a title that I decided to read the description. It sure did sound familiar, yet the title was not the same. A quick check of IMDB and sure enough, the movie Simon Birch is the film version of Owen Meany. Who woulda thunk it?
That this is nine years old and stars Jim Carrey, I hold no hopes of it being any good, but what the heck, I’ll give it a try.

I am a baseball traditionalist, but there is absolutely no denying that the ALCS is perfect with the Red Sox and the Yankees meeting again. This is good for baseball.
Despite the setting, I have no doubts with how it will end. I used to live in Boston and Fenway was just a couple stops down on the 57 bus. Although I am not a wicked hardcore Sox fan, I do root for them. Once again there will be disappointment. Maybe Boston is Mudville.
It’s not that Sox fans are fatalists; they are not. PEDROphile notes the difference this year: pitching.
We have improved ours with the acquisition of Schilling and the way Arroyo is pitching. We have also improved our bullpen with the addition of closer Keith Foulke who got some huge outs against Anaheim. Meanwhile, the Y*nkees pitching is not what it was last year. There is no Andy Pettitte, a pitcher who dominated us. cl*mens, who all of a sudden has become a big game pitcher in the eyes of ESPN, is gone. Quite frankly, I am not intimidated by Kevin Brown, Mike Mussina, and whoever else the Y*nkees throw at us. We also swept Anaheim and all our pitchers will be fresh. I’m not predicting a Red Sox victory, but we have a chance. We just have to perform and stay sharp.
Sons of Sam Horn has a multi-page thread analyzing the series that has yet to begin.
Nevertheless, it will be exciting to watch the series. Turn down Joe Buck, grab a scorecard, and enjoy the best rivalry MLB has to offer this postseason.

To be silent adds mystery. When I open my mouth, there is no doubt that I shape opinion that is formed of me. Since I take no care in “shaping” that opinion, it would be better to allow the opinion to form mysteriously.

I’m not poetic
if I were, I might have been able to express myself more appropriately
I’m not pretty
a lot of insecurities might be solved if I were
I’m not romantic
I’ve never been shown
I am . . . me
