USGS Data Collection Stations

When I first read this hunt I knew exactly where there was a station. I marked this in the database and didn’t think much of it. Yet, in this last year while I have been in that area, I have failed to take the requisite photographs. :( The station I was going to log is more than an hour from me. I am not making a special trip just for one hunt. That is reserved to visit the Maldives. ;)

Anyhow, as I went through the database to tidy things up I came to this listing. I figured there had to be a closer station. There is. Actually, I drive by this frequently even though I never realized it was there.

So, Fritz and I were on our way to Bridgeton again and I decided to pull over and log this. Unfortunately the paint with the logo is severely worn. Not to worry, the USGS site has a nice confirming photograph of the area. :)

There were lots of children in the water here while we took our photographs.

Thanks for the fun!

. . . I drove down Buckshutem and then headed down Cedar. Along the way, I decided to stop and log the airport sign scavenger hunt. While I walked back to the car, I recalled there was a benchmark here I somehow never logged. I walked over and took several photographs of this good-condition mark.

Fly away, be free!

I suspect I may have the easiest time logging this this scavenger hunt. This airport entry monument is within walking distance of my home. I stopped by on my way home from Bridgeton.

There isn’t much to add to this. I have photographed this monument several times over the years for various things. It’s there. And I’m done. :)

Organizational Behavior

LCOP

This hunt corrected a misconception I had. When you first published this I immediately thought of my hometown of Cape May, NJ. When one enters town and turns to get onto Washington, he is met with several placards. I drove down there to snap the requisite photographs. Much to my surprise, there were no organizational signs on those placards. Rather, there are advertisements for local businesses. Either I was mistaken (most likely) or the signs have changed over the years.

Anyhow, I have seen plenty of examples since, but haven’t actually stopped to get these. A couple weeks ago I passed a wonderful spread in Washington Township, NJ, but it was midnight and I decided not to stop. I did mark the waypoint to return.

In the interim, I found this bunch as one enters Bridgeton, NJ on Rt. 77 near Carll’s Corner.

What’s that Wildflower?

LCDX

I cannot answer why it’s taken me more than three years to log this. I have plenty of photographs of wildflowers from my outings. Several times I have specifically snapped photographs for this hunt, yet never posted them. It’s all part of the grand disorganization of the thousands of photographs I have on file.

Anyhoo . . .

  • Scientific name: Cichorium intybus
  • Other names: chicory as well as blue sailors, succory, and coffeeweed
  • Description: bushy perennial herb. Apparently it can be blue, white, or lavender. I am only familiar with the blue variety.
  • Flowering season: summer; in the fall the roots are harvested (when it is cultivated) to be used as a coffee substitute/additive
  • Habitat: roadsides in Europe and North America
  • Range: throughout Europe, which is its native habitat and North America where it has been naturalized
  • Interesting facts: used as a coffee substitute/additive; endive is also called chicory, but it is not the exact same plant (Cichorium endivia)
