Global GeoPoker 8
Saturday, May 12th, 2007Within minutes, game eight of Global GeoPoker will commence. I am excited. I will be liveblogging the event right here, so stay tuned. It’s possible I may employ Twitter to update and pull it together as I have time throughout the day, so mosey over to there to see my tweets.

Sigh . . . on the runway at the airport. I have to wait until someone logs now to get new coordinates.
12:42:
Finally, a new card. brb . . .
12:56: Hole Card

Right around the corner. The folks who called the police when I totaled the second cachemobile are having a yard sale today. A few houses up Cedar Street is where the card played. The card would have been back right at the pool of the house. Today would be a good day for a dip.

Scored the card out Bluebird Lane in Union Lake WMA near Rob’s Lost Again geocache. I love the sugar sand out here. I stopped by the lake and took some photographs. The card played in the middle of the brush and pine trees. Nothing particularly interesting at the spot.

N39° 24.834, W075° 05.958No go. I thought I could get here, but I was only about to get to within .1 of a mile at the bend in Smith. Damn! Time to re-draw.2:48:
N39° 23.202, W075° 05.736 I never had such a difficult time playing cards in this game. I may need to consider changing my coordinates to the center of town. Too much open space out this way.
3:41: 3HN39 24.006, W075 01.686 Jott didn’t like my voice message. After re-drawing four times, I decided to re-set my home coordinates. We have moved to center city Millville for the day. <g>I found the card easily at 403 8th Street between Oak and Vine.. It would play in the backyard, but I logged it from the street.3:45:
N39° 22.914, W075° 02.664So much for moving.
Patiently waiting for a new card to be dealt as Scout eggs me on. <lol>5:00:
Wow! It’s been more than an hour and no one has played a card. Not good. I need to get out to the store to pick up Mother’s Day gifts. I could have done that by now.It occurs to me that geopoker could have a stalemate if all players draw coordinates that cannot be played. Obviously, a new player could always be added to get the ball rolling, but it is at least theoretically possible.5:22:
N39° 22.794, W074° 59.100Finally! Off to Menantico Ponds then to Home Depot.
7:17: 8S
Wow! After waiting an hour and a half for a new card, I went out to Menantico Ponds, a favorite place of mine in town. I parked along the hardpack and hoofed it 350 feet to ground zero. Nothing terribly interesting here.
Afterwards, I drove down to the water and hung out a bit. Then it was off to buy Adiroondack chairs for my bride. Except, Home Depot didn’t have the nice cedar ones they have online. That means we’ll go to L.L. Bean instead, but it also means there is no Mother’s Day gift. grrr . . .
I visited the mall and picked up some cards and poked around looking for some clothes for Gert. Nada. I picked up a gift card instead.
Now how and it’s getting late. I am not certain how much more I have in me today.

I just stuck the tater tots in the oven at 7:30 and I am back home nine minutes later to begin cooking dinner. Fritz is crying, Gert is frustrated, and Beetle is ornery. It’s tough playing an all-day game.
The card was easily scored. I forgot the house number, but I was within 40 feet. It would have landed pretty much at the front door of the little blue house. I felt uncomfortable snapping a photograph right here.

Dinner is over and then we struggled getting everyone calmed down. Beetle made it to bed, but then announced she needed to go potty. This is a stall tactic. Fritz has an upset tummy and has been screaming.
While Gert helped with the potty, I serenaded Fritz. We had a medley of: I Got You Babe, Billy Don’t Be a Hero, Delta Dawn, Kung Fu Fighting, I Know You Rider, Shakedown Street, In the Air Tonight, Boogie Shoes, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Old McDonald. He loved it! The two-month old even cooed a bit.
Once everyone was settled, I headed out for this card. It is now dark and there are great flashes of lightning highlighting the sky. A light rain has begun to fall. I headed up High Street to loop around on the correct side of Second Street. I pulled over and was at 80 feet when I noticed a couple yutes approaching. Whether for harm or to sell drugs, I am not certain, but this is not the part of town I hang out in especially at night. I drove off. The house where the card was was four houses north of the RR sign while heading south on Second Street.

Not going to get there in this downpour. I am probably done with this game. Interestingly, nine and one-half hours in we haven’t even dealt half the deck. This is a very odd night.

I should be able to score this one at night. Fritz is still fussy. I am not heading out right now. We shall see. The storm seems to have subsided.
10:40: 8D, discard AH
Easily scored. I drive by this daily. There’s a dirt parking lot beside the plant up from Alcan that I thought would get me close enough. Frankly, I thought I would be able to get even closer, but 321 feet was all I registered. I could have squeezed out another 10 feet if I had to. There’s a fence.
It’s nighttime and rainy. I didn’t want to hang around. There was an 18-wheeler parker there in fron of the mound of dirt. I was going to drive around it, but I saw what appeared to be a very deep puddle on the far side. I backed up and headed home.

It’s easily gettable, but do I need it? I call.
The Wonderful World of Web 2.0
Tuesday, May 8th, 2007I love technology. I particularly like Web 2.0 apps.
A while ago I read a post by Robert Scoble about the merits of Twitter. I began twittering and have become hooked. I saw a mention to 30 Boxes one day on Twitter. I had looked at it once before, but gave it a more thorough examination that day. Soon after I saw a tweet about Power Twitter, which allows one to run one’s feeds through 30 Boxes and update one’s Twitter profile.
Morton Fox mentioned aNobii one night on Twitter. I began entering my books that night. With Power Twitter, my profile can be updated with newly added books. Later he also mentioned Tumblr. I joined immediately when I saw that I would be able to map my account to a sub-domain of mine. Now I run all my feeds to Tumblr and it can be viewed all in one place.
Yesterday there was a simple tweet from 30 Boxes:
look at this — Jott to 30 Boxes » link to aPathetic Blog: I’m like a sandwich, a sandwich for the INSANE.
That link explained how to use Jott.com to update one’s 30 Boxes calendar. Jott provides a telephone number to call. One speaks his event and Jott translates that to text. It then e-mails the text to a GMail account of mine that fowards it to 30 Boxes. Voilà, my calendar is updated. I appreciated this so much I left a comment on the blog and mentioned how nice it would be to be able to call Jott to send a tweet.
Today, Jeff left a comment here at eCache that he put up a post today how to do just what I asked. I set up my account with egorcast and can now use my cellphone to send a tweet to Twitter. Now I have Jeff as a friend at Twitter.
I do not have a Blackberry or a smartphone, but I can now use my cell to do similar tasks. And that is all because of Web 2.0 technology and specifically Twitter. I love this stuff.
Next up is configuring a script I found to read a bedtime story to Twitter each night when I log off. I just hope I can set up the cron job properly.
Full Tumblr: A Jigger of Opinion
Tuesday, May 1st, 2007For those of you visit this site to read the entries, you may have noticed over the last several days more items in the sidebar. My Web 2.0 activities have been increasing lately. I am addicted to Twitter and 30 Boxes is becoming important in my scheduling. Those along with my aNobii bookshelf, recipes, videos at You Tube, my photographs, the link blog, and del.icio.us bookmarks all have feeds that have been showing up here in some capacity.
But it’s becoming cluttered and it’s a lot for you dear reader to follow. A feed for this, a feed for that. Despite the video I shared recently explaining how to read feeds, some have expressed privately their hesitation with embracing the technology. Not to fear; there is now a solution.
Tonight I have launched Full Tumblr: A Jigger of Opinion.
Tumblr.com is a site that one can create a lifestream. A lifestream is a feed of all one’s feeds. I compile all my feeds through my account at Tumblr and it provides the feed/site for the blog posts, photographs, tweets, calendar, link blog, etc.
I then set up a sub-domain here on my site that is set up to display the contents of the feed. Think of it as one-stop shopping. As more of my content is provided via RSS, it too will display here.
Fellow geocachers: would it not be wonderful if cache logs could be displayed in such a manner? The game is behind the technology. For the record, Navicache has had a feed for a couple years now.
Enjoy!
RSS for Those Interested
Tuesday, April 24th, 2007Family and friends hear from me all the time about RSS. Heck, those of you who read my Twitter feed read about how I have caught up here, am posting there, etc.
Today over at Twitter, I read Diggfeed. This is Digg.com’s feed updated to Twitter. How kewl! The post that caught my eye was this one:
RSS in plain English: A video tutorial explaining the basics of RSS, as simple and elegant as Common Craft’s inimitable paper-and-marker technique.
although it truncated at:
RSS in plain English: A video tutorial explaining the basics of RSS, as simple and elegant as Common Craf
since Twitter caps the message at 140 characters.
The true story, however, is the video that Digg linked to. The video explains in layman’s terms how all this technology works. I know some who read eCache would benefit from this video.
I love all the technology that is involved to learn about this. This is what Web 2.0 is all about. Enjoy!
