Wrong way stripes

Apparently the Maryland DOT wants folks to drive off the road. Silly government workers.

Truth be told, I had great trouble locating one of these. Since you posted this last summer I have looked for one of these. My family will even tell you how obsessed I have become about this. I’ll hand it to the NJ DOT; it apparently is staffed with quite competent workers as I have driven all over the state and have not found one of these.

We spent some time in the DC area and I spotted one on 495 right near the MD-VA line. I was so excited I woke up a sleeping wife, who has complained since that I did so. That sign, however, proved unloggable as it is on a curve in heavy traffic. Bummed we continued on.

Later in the day I was out caching. As I am wont to be, I was running late. The entire family and our hosts were waiting for my return so we could go to dinner. I hurried home.

But, wasn’t that sign hung backwards? I was on a small two-lane road with some traffic. I hadn’t gotten a great look at it, but I am pretty certain it was backwards. I drove on. Hell, I pulled into a development, sprang back onto Muncaster the other way. Back at where I thought it was, I pulled over and waited for the traffic to pass and then banged another U-turn.

Hot dang! There she is! I found my white whale. I found one of these signs. Holy smokes.

As I stood there snapping the obligatory photographs, I kept thinking there was some reason it was hung like this that would discount this find. Nope. There is no reason for vehicles to go the way the sign indicates.

I enjoyed this hunt. I learned about a very common item that I did not know about. My eyes are trained to spot these things now. The horror!

In Florida we have blue reflective lights here and there in the roadbed. Do you know what they mean? They designate a fire hydrant nearby. Maybe they are feasible only here where there are no snow plows to dislodge them.

Interestingly, when I was driving back from the zoo last week (two weeks ago, I guess), what do I see? Yup, just a few miles from the eCache home there certainly is a wrong way stripe. Had I not driven that way in the last year? Or had I just missed it? Questions without answers . . .
