Dot . . . Dot . . . Dot . . .

Sadly, this article is dead on about my favorite two actors . . . Someone said to me recently that anger is a big eraser; it erases what it perceives is a bigger emotion. Hmmm . . . Overheard from a public school teacher: “Clinton won Pennsylvania 55% to 47%” . . . There is a actually a Mac & Cheese group on Flickr . . . Spring is here, it’s time for sailing. I eagerly await a couple upcoming sails on the A.J. Meerwald . . . Gasoline prices are having us re-consider our summer vacation plans. It may be better to fly than drive . . . O’Reilly has another new segment (Reality Check). It’s a clunker. The show needs an overhaul; it is becoming far too segmented for my tastes . . . The two highlights of Corzine’s budget were closing nine state parks and eliminating the Dept. of Agriculture.  Corzine has backed away from both proposals.  That is fine, but not a penny more should be added to the bottom line.  How much you want to bet more spending is added? . . . It’s good to see justice has been served: Wesley Snipes is going to jail (I bet there will be an appeal) . . . Wow!  Zoomabooma sent me this article that explains how the Grateful Dead’s vault (stuff, not music) has been donated  to Santa Cruz . . .

Also blogged on this date . . .

Just the other day, some friends and I were trying to pinpoint when Al Pacino officially became a parody of himself. I think it was Scent of a Woman, even though he did some fine non-parody work after that in Heat and Donnie Brasco.

For De Niro, I think it’s been a much more gradual slide, but I think the point-of-no-return was between when Meet the Parents was wrapped and Meet the Fockers was greenlighted.

I’m hoping Harrison Ford, my favorite movie star (notice I didn’t say actor), will be rejuvenated in the new Indiana Jones movie. He never even bothered becoming a parody of himself, he just showed up to the sets of movies like Firewall and Hollywood Homicide to collect a check for as little effort as possible.

I won’t comment on Pacino but as far as De Niro, I’ve got a different take on it — he keeps making film after film no matter what the movie is because he likes to act. He enjoys the craft. Sometimes he doesn’t know a film’s not gonna go over so well at the box office. Sometimes he thinks it’ll be a fine piece of work but the director’s inept. May have looked good printed out in black & white… but not up on the silver screen. Maybe he knows some of these parts are quite sub-par… but he takes ‘em anyway because he just enjoys working. He doesn’t need the money. That whole angle is bull, I’m sure of it. Any project outside of movie-making, he could have investors lined up for years to be a part of a De Niro project. It’s just for the love of acting. If that’s true — I applaud him.

About the GD thing — is there a California vacation in your future? I know I’ve got a reason now to go Santa Cruz. One of my thoughts about that was: how many freshmen brand new to UCSC will one day be at the library, get bored of studying, wander into the GD room and get Turned On? “Who is this band? Oh yeah, I’ve heard of them. I didn’t know they were this popular.”

Pacino seems to have gone for the money right after Donnie Brasco. Prior to that, he was still putting out good movies, in my opinion: City Hall, Heat, Carlito’s Way, Scent of a Woman (I liked it), Glengarry Glen Ross, etc.

De Niro’s descent is not quite as defined. While immediately following Heat he put out The Fan, a horrible movie, he followed that with Sleepers. While he was not the leading man, that was an excellent movie, if not disturbing. Then there was Marvin’s Room (didn’t see) and Cop Land (yuck) followed by Wag the Dog and Jackie Brown, both awesome! Since then, only 15 Minutes has been any good, and he was offed early in that one.

I do not see a California vacation any time soon. While there are plenty of places in the Golden State that would be interesting to see, they are down on the list for me. Right now a tour of Kentucky distillers has my attention. Coupled with Louisville Slugger, I think that is where I want to go. Lord knows when that will happen.

Florida and Jamaica will be first. I am hoping to stop by the only place the Dead played in Jamaica when I am there. ;)
