I’ve haven’t listened to my iPod much the last couple days save the Valentine’s Day show from 1968. Today I knew I was going to be on the trails, so I made certain the iPod was loaded.
Loaded onto the iPod right now are the following shows:
Grateful Dead
68-02-14: Carousel Ballroom - San Francisco, CA
73-06-22: P.N.E. Coliseum - Vancouver, BC, Canada
standard 1973 show, which is to say awesome! The jam from Truckin’ into The Other One is worth the listen alone.
77-04-23: Springfield Civic Center Arena - Springfield, MA
This show is perfect for someone like me who generally abstains from ‘77 shows because they are so over-played. Yes, awesome playing and great sound (thanks Betty), but over-played. This was recommended to me and it is a fun listen to. Pre-May the band was on fire. All most ever listen to are the May shows.
79-11-05: The Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA
I love the November-December run the boys played this year. The 1 November show has one of my favorite Scarlet-Fire. The late placement of Lost Sailor-Saint of Circumstance is interesting. Brent was really fitting in by now and I love the jamming.
86-03-25: The Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA
I attended this show. The first Desolation Row was played as well as Phil belting out Tom Thumb Blues. The GDTRFB sounds flawed. I always enjoy It Must Have Been the Roses. I sang it loudly (and I am certain out of tune) hiking today.
Legion of Mary
75-05-22: Keystone - Berkeley, CA
When I was turned onto LoM 20+ years ago I fell in love. Absolutely the perfect mix of jazz and jamming for me. I ran into this show twice recently and both times the folks highlighted Little Sunflower. I was unfamiliar with this tune. Holy smokes! It is nice to stumble across something so new and beautiful, even if it was recorded 33 years ago. I love this song. I played it several times today and at over 16 minutes, that’s saying something.
There is also an upbeat Road Runner here too. I highly recommend this show.
Johnny Cash
03-07-05: Carter Family Fold - Hiltons, VA
I had seen lots of video of this previously, but had not listened in some time. In retrospect, one can hear how fragile Cash sounded that day. I always enjoyed Big River, big surprise. Cash handled his standards just fine.
Jerry Garcia Band
78-11-03: Keystone - Palo Alto, CA
The sound on this isn’t the finest, but I love So What? I recall when I first heard Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue album. My employer at the time played great jazz and blues for the diners. I got turned onto a lot of good stuff. If I am not mistaken, Kind of Blue was my first purchased CD (even before I had a player) given that my cat Butterscotch threw up on the borrowed copy. It’s possible that was another CD. If so, this was the second.
Anyhow, So What? is awesome. I will listen to any show that includes it.
Merl Saunders Band
78-10-03: Shady Grove - San Francisco, CA
This was another recommended show. Jerry sits in with Merl’s band. I am not a huge fan of this show. Others love it, so go figure. Come Together is rather well played, however.

Ah, the best laid plans . . .
This cache was supposed be earlier in the day, but after frustrations on the other side, I changed things up a bit. For a while, I didn’t even think this one was going to be sought today. Nevertheless, I was able to squeeze it in on the way home.
As I was leaving Turkey Encounter, Gert called and said she was just leaving Tuckerton, so I knew I had time. I drove down the familiar hard pack and pulled over at a familiar spot.
I headed right for the water where I was treated to a gorgeous view of the sandwash as the sun was setting. Wonderful. Yet the GPS was still a distance away on the other side of the water. Ah . . . am I going to have to drive around? Nope, I found a water crossing. It proved to be fortuitous as I had a muddy left boot from earlier in the day that this water washed off.
I found the cache easily on the other side. Ah, another ammo can. I like finding ammo boxes in the woods.
I signed in. It occurred to me that I awoke with a Lava cache and I am ending my day with a Lava cache.
It was a good day. (more…)

Finally. This one was scheduled for much earlier in the day. P-Pop usually takes me to good places so I was looking forward to getting back here. I was a bit concerned when at the end of power line road there was mush. I knew I wasn’t going through that. Then I saw the trail.
I got to the end of the trail in no time but had plenty of distance left. I remembered having read a cache that required crossing water. Of course, I had no idea if it was around here, Delaware, etc., but it sure was looking like that is what I was going to have to do. The water was deep enough on this February day for me to ponder whether I would actually do it. I waited a minute and the GPS caught up. I went back to the trail and there it was, right where I had been initially. I guess I need to add looking for coffee cups to my repertoire as this is the second one I have found recently that has had me scratching my head for a moment.
I actually traded at this cache. I saw Wigoweb had left a couple signature coins. They are not trackable on Groundspeak, but from some other company I have not heard from previously. I decided to pick one up to see how this works.
I thought this was going to be the last cache of the day, but I was able to squeeze in another. (more…)

Well, this day certainly had gotten on in a hurry. It seemed like just a moment ago I was enjoying the sunrise over the Maurice River. The sun was dropping in the west and I still had a couple more caches here to find . . . forget the others that were on the schedule.
I made it back to the truck from bushwhacking for Rob’s caches. I avoided the puddles on the road I was on and soon came to the power lines. This cache seemed to be just across the way. I headed over. Before I knew it, I had driven by. This is a narrow stretch and turning around was not meant to be.
I backed up enough and got out. The cache was probably the easiest I found today; an unmistakenable pile of sticks behind a tree.
It’s been a while since I have seen a coffee can for a container. This one was rusted thoroughly on the outside, but amazingly, the inside seemed to be in good shape.
I read the cache description while here. It seems like the hider lives on the other side of this road. Had it not been in the description, I would not have realized this hooked up with civilization.
I did not spend much time as it was time to get a move on. Turning around was equally difficult here so I backed up some more. I eventually found a wide enough space to do so.

I do not believe I ever read this cache description or logs before. Once I was at On the way to P-Pop’s…, I decided to see what was closest. I thought I was seeking Turkey Encounter. Sure enough, this pops up. I began reading the description and all started making sense; Rob took the wrong road to a cache and dropped these two.
Looking over things, folks had trouble finding the cache. Some who found the first hadn’t done this one. It was only .3 miles further, so why not?
I am happy I had found the correct road as this one is not driveable, imo. It closed in tightly. I saw many horseshoe prints in the ground. They looked fairly recent so this area must get some traffic.
After circling around for a bit at the bend and finding nothing, knowing the last cache had been off for me, and that others had trouble with this, I looked at the clue. It’s a good thing it was there because there was no way I was going to find this cache on this day using coordinates.
Over the years I have had trouble with Rob’s caches. Our GPS units, style, etc. just do not seem to mesh. I like the guy, but his caches frustrate me. I just do not seem to be in on what he is trying to accomplish. Anyhow, I found the cache more than 50′ away from where my GPS displayed the coordinates to be.
I signed in took a couple photographs and hoofed it back to the truck. (more…)
