UP A LAZY RIVER

After the Hunter’s Mill cache, I decided to head to this one. Hmmm . . . it seems like if I just follow the briar trail along the tributary I could get there. All the while I kept hearing Jerry bellow:

Way down upon Seminole Square
belly of the river tide
call for me and I will be there
for the price of a taxi ride
Night double-clutches into today
like a truck downshifting its load
Way down, down along Lazy River Road

Ducking, detaching, and otherwise negotiating the briars on this overgrown trail, I came to the end . . . about 100′ shy of the cache. Indeed, the mighty Tuckahoe stood in the way of success. That’ll teach me not to read cache descriptions. :)

Back out I went, found the truck, banged another U-y, and headed up the other side of the river. Familiar ground.

The little trail in reminded me again why I repaired the truck. There are a couple deep ruts and while I tried to steer clear, there was just no room not to ride them. Slip-sliding away!

I drove past the trail I needed and quickly corrected my mistake. Out I got and hiked down to the river. One could see the old dike far better from this side. Yup, right over there is where I just was.

Reception was pretty good here as the sun glistened off the still river. This really is a nice location. The only issue is that I struggled finding the cache. :( Sigh . . .

I found it eventually, about 25 feet from where I was looking. I expected it to be at the river and there was a perfect tree on which I would have secured it, but it wasn’t there. After referring to the notes and reading about a wire, I looked at another tree. Ah, there it was.

I was a bit surprised by the container, although it seems to be holding up as there is no moisture inside. I spread out on the bank of the Tuckahoe to log my visit. What a beautiful spot to be on an unseasonably warm February day.

Lazy River Road would have been perfect, but it was Ripple, another apropos song, that shared this moment.

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

Indeed!
