The NFL
It’s probably because I am cheap, but I do not understand the NFL. In recent years I have followed the league less and less. The games are on when I am home, but I am usually doing other things and just pick up on a play here and a play there. I know the big things going on, but not all the details.
Around Thanksgiving I learned that I had been missing a weekly Thursday evening game. Last year I kept forgetting to tune into the NFL Network. This year it is a pay channel and I will not subscribe to it. I didn’t even realize there was a weekly game.
For years folks have complained about blackouts, etc. Today it is my turn.
Admittedly I do not know all the broadcast rules, but it is my understanding that my home team, the Eagles, are shown no matter whatever other match-up may be shown. I have no issue there. From what I can tell, that had nothing to do with what happened today.
The Eagles were shown on Fox at 4:00. On CBS at 1:00 there was a game. In addition to being in the Philly market, we are also somewhat in the New York market and given both New York teams play in my state (the fifth smallest), we see a lot of Giants and Jets games throughout the year.
Today there was a Jets game I actually wanted to see. That doesn’t happen much, but given they were playing the Patriots, the game was in the snow, and the Pats are making a run at the Dolphins’ record, it was a game I wanted to see. It included a New York team so I definitely expected to tune in.
Nope. Somehow the NFL deemed the Pittsburgh-Jacksonville game was of more interest to us in South Jersey. I cannot figure that one out. It didn’t pay off as I hardly watched as I did other things. I couldn’t even tell you who won the game.
I did watch the Eagles game. How ’bout them Cowboys? And my lowly Dolphins also scored a big one today.
As long as the NFL continues to move toward pay-for-view, this spectator will continue to find other things to occupy my time on Sunday.
