Independence

As I have mentioned a few times on this blog, I have been disgruntled with the Republican Party.

I have never been a shill for it, but being conservative, it is where I thought I belonged.  Yet, the Republican president along with a Republican Congress spent my tax dollars silly and showed absolutely no fiscal restraint.

The New Jersey GOP is so out of touch it is difficult to imagine it ever winning a statewide election again.  Hell, I tried to involve myself in the county party and could not even get Larry Pepper (Cumberland County GOP chair) to return a telephone call.

Perhaps it is a bit of bandwagon jumping, but the Republican Party does not seem to represent me at this point.  It was 17 August 1998 that I left the Democratic Party.  That, of course, was the day President Clinton admitted he lied to the country.  Nearly nine years later, I am less than satisfied with the Republican Party.

Today, I became independent once again.  That does not mean I have moved off any of my positions.  Rather, it is affirmation that no party does a good enough job of representing my positions.  I am conservative and neither the Democrats or the Republicans are equally conservative.

Interestingly, when I arrived at the county courthouse today to fill out the paperwork with Fritz, it was like entering a fortress.  It was made very clear that no cameras, cell phones, etc. were permitted.  I had to leave ID with the digital camera.  So much for taking a photograph of me filling out the paperwork to post here.  I also had to go through metal scanners.  Of course, it was set off.  Not only was I frisked, so was Fritz.  Yup, county cops frisked my four-month old boy.  Sigh . . .

I did finally get to see the Liberty Bell that Bridgeton, NJ has.  It is unimpressive, but I have been meaning to go see it for years now and have finally done so.  Perhaps it is fitting that I viewed this on the day I declared my own independence.  Hmmm . . .

Anyhow, I am now officially not a Republican any longer.

Also blogged on this date . . .

I’m glad I don’t live in a state where I have to go to the courthouse and declare my affiliation. That way I can decide how irritated I am with Republicans at any given time.
