What Is Free?
The Asbury Park Press begins its editorial about charter schools thusly:
The state’s 53 charter schools are free public schools.
It spent the balance of the piece arguing for equal funds for its students that traditional public schools recieve. That doesn’t sound very free to us.
This is more than an argument of semantics. The perception is that public education is free. It is not. It is big business and it is bankrupting our state. That’s because there is no plan, no business model, and no oversight. Public education is given $8.6 billion to build schools and everyone feigns surprise when that doesn’t get the job done. The mentality is that money will continue to flow. After all, this is “free” money.
There is nothing free about education, and we should call those who attempt to make the case that it is on it.
