Where Did I Go Wrong?

Today I received information about the annual scholarship golf tournament for my high school. I once contributed to this event. I shared with Gert what a $10,000 donation would net us:

  • a message of my choosing on a sign at the 19th Hole Reception
  • recognition in the tournament program and at the 19th Hole Reception
  • recognition (half page) in the glossy school magazine
  • my logo imprinted on tournament souvenirs given to all participants
  • eight entries into the tournament

Gert didn’t bite. It’s okay, it’s been 15 years since I’ve played golf.

Tuition this year to this school is $35,500. That includes room and board. It also includes a subsidy. The school has a massive endowment (you have to love the DuPonts) and it subsidizes every tuition. It’s been a few years since I was on the Alumni Board, but a fair guesstimate would put the price of educating one student at approximately $43,000 annually. Insane!

Somehow I was graduated and never got the bug for the money-track. It is inconceivable to me to give a $10,000 gift to the school. What it must be like to have that kind of money!

That’s already a pretty expensive school. Do they really need to raise more money?

Even though I could spare the money, I’ve never donated to my alma mater. I didn’t like the way they treated me back when I was in school and the way they were obstructive later on when I needed a reference from a professor. Also, I disagreed with their appointment of former NYC Mayor David Dinkins as professor. (That happened after I graduated but still.)

As for having that kind of money, what does it mean, really? So long as you have your home, your health, and your shrimp and black bean taco salad, could one really ask for more?
