Do Your Job

As a home scorer, I find baseball announcers are pretty much not doing their jobs these days. I have posted somewhere here about how one pretty much needs to score with a laptop at home as the announcers do such a poor job. This post is to reinforce that claim.

Yesterday, knowing I wasn’t going to be around to watch the Phillies game, I set the DVR to watch later. I began watching/scoring the game last evening. But Easter was such a big day, I couldn’t remain awake and stopped the game to continue today.

I am scoring the game electronically. It is now the eighth inning. Michael Bourne had pinch hit for the pitcher. Now in the bottom half of the inning, the announcer said Bourne remained in the game and Geary came into pitch.

Hello? If you do not tell me what position Bourne is playing, I cannot get the new pitcher in the game!

Grrrr . . .

So, what did I have to do? I had to load the play-by-play of the game from MLB.com. But I couldn’t do so without seeing the result of the game.

Once again, with the announcers not doing their job, the game was ruined for me.

Usually I can fault Chris Wheeler outright for this. He was one of three in the booth when this took place. Unfortunately, it was Harry’s call. Earlier in the game, the hall-of-famer blew the call of Burrell throwing out a runner at third. Thrice he said the play was 9-5, when indeed it would be 7-5 as Burrell plays left.

It is just so frustrating to score from the televised feed any longer. The home scorer is seldom considered.
