How to Spend Education Dollars

The state funds the majority of an Abbott district’s budget.  Those funds have remained flat/generally flat over the last five to six years.  Obviously, salaries, energy costs, food, etc. have continued to rise during that time.   The same amount of money does not buy as much today as it did in 2001.

To make that money work, districts have had to cut back on what has been considered superfluous.  My job as a technology coordinator was axed this year.  My job now in basic skills has been proposed to be cut for next year.  This job is an instructional position in which I work with students in need.

Districts do still spend money.  I thought today’s Daily Journal article provides a good understanding to the public as to how this district that has proposed cutting instructional staff spends its money.

Theodore Peters, the current Vineland High School 9-10 principal, will be assistant superintendent of secondary education and special programs. His salary will rise from $120,392 to $131,995, effective July 7.

But there is more.

The board also promoted Thomas McCann, from VHS 11-12 principal to the new post of executive principal of all of Vineland High School, effective July 1. The board and the Vineland Administrators and Supervisors Association will negotiate McCann’s salary.

And still more.

The board previously voted to create associate principal positions for the 9-10 and 11-12 buildings. Those associate principals would hold the leadership position at the building level and be responsible for the day-to-day operations of their building.

The plan also calls for creating eight administrative assistants, one for each of the respective eight small learning communities.

I offer the above without comment.
