Politicos Dictate NJ Curriculum
Jeff “I Sponsor Every Bill” Van Drew and Little Buddy Nelson Albano got their wish; Governor Corzine will conditionally veto the bill that would remove the mandate that New Jersey teachers teach about holidays the last school day prior to the holiday. The conditional veto is to ensure that Memorial Day and Veterans Day are still required to be taught.
“Symbolically, the bill sent a message that these two days do not have the importance they should have,” he said. “Removing them sends the wrong message right now.”
That the requirement is so specific as to mandate what day a lesson is to be taught and that there is no consequence for not doing so highlights why this is bad legislation. Curriculum should not be written by elected politicians but rather by those who are trained and paid to do so.
Once again we see the power of the veterans lobby in Trenton.
