Governing With Conviction
I applaud Mayor Quinn (Millville) and Mayor Barse (Vineland) for their convictions. One does not see this frequently enough from our elected officials.
Recently, New Jersey passed civil union legislation for gay couples. The gist of it is that the government of New Jersey recognizes gay marriage.
Quinn and Barse are Catholic. Gay marriage is verboten in the Catholic faith. Both vowed not to perform the services. Both have taken lots of heat for their decision. Today, they issued a letter to clarify their position:
In order to comply with our legal responsibilities as public officials while remaining true to personal religious beliefs, we shall no longer perform marriage or similar ceremonies for anyone.
The two mayors have my support for their decision.
P.S. Just so it isn’t lost, I would like to highlight another quote from this article.
“Basically, I’m very liberal,” Quinn said. “I have no problem with consenting adults doing anything they want to do.”
Not that we didn’t know about that about Mayor Quinn, but we are happy he acknowledged just how liberal he is.
