76-07-04 Phillies v. Pirates

I recall watching many Phillies games on my parents’ color television when I was a boy. The color television was in their bedroom.

One game in particular I recall seeing took place on 4 July 1976. One might think I had some great bicentennial story to tell given the significance of the day. I don’t. I watched the Phillies play the Pirates. It was a doubleheader.

In game one, Steve Carlton went for the Phils. He won the game going only 6.2 as Ron Reed wrapped up with 2.1 innings of relief (the game was different back then).

What is interesting about this game is the top of second inning when the Phillies exploded for four runs.

Greg Luzinski led off and tripled to right. The Bull tripled. How great is that?!? Dick Allen then walked. Crazy Jay Johnstone doubled to center. This scored Luzinski and Allen went to third. Garry Maddox was walked intentionally. This loaded the bases.

Up next was catcher Tim McCarver. McCarver hit a shot. I believe it was to right field. Maddox, who was on first, waited to make certain that the ball was not caught. McCarver didn’t hit too many home runs.

As Maddox waited, an exuberant McCarver rounded first and passed his centerfielder.

I distinctly recall seeing this and wondering if it would be called. Sure enough it was. Sigh . . .

The rules (7.08(h)) clearly state:

Any runner is out when he passes a preceding runner before such runner is out

McCarver was credited with a single and three RBIs; Allen, Johnstone, and Maddox scored.

I share this as tonight I purchased myself a belated Christmas gift. As I mentioned elsewhere, we are decorating my son’s bedroom in a baseball theme. We are determining whether we are going to use red pinstripes or something else. But on the wall will hang the scorecard from this game.

Lanny Frattare, the longtime Pirates announcer, is selling his personal scorecards. I will frame this gem of a game and hang it on Fritz’s wall. I look forward to sharing my experience with him about the game.

Isn’t that what dads are supposed to do?
