Welcome Back to School

Today we received a form letter from Beetle’s school. It is the standard welcoming letter schools send out. It told us about the new security system (each family has a PIN number to enter), when the open house is, and things Little Miss Muffin needs this year (last year we purchased an art smock that was never used . . . grrr).

Anyhow, in the middle of this letter is an underlined sentence. The underline did what it was intended to; it drew my attention.

Please note: In accordance with state regulations, children will not be permitted to pack lunches this year.

What?

Now, the sentence is poorly worded. Technically, as long as I pack the lunch, Beetle can bring it to school. But that is not what is meant at all, is it?

What New Jersey regulation would prohibit a child from bringing her own lunch to school? What could the intention possibly be?

Beetle is young and attends a private school. Why is Governor Corzine intruding on what we choose to feed my daughter?
