“I Took As Much Risk As I Could”

During the gubernatorial campaign, then candidate Corzine pitched plans for New Jersey when he became governor.

In A More Affordable New Jersey Corzine stated:

But none of those things can happen when average New Jersey families are sitting at their kitchen tables every month, wondering how they are going to pay their property taxes, afford health care, handle their ever-growing commute, pay for their kids to go to college, and save for retirement.

Corzine has been attending to New Jersey’s business as CEO governor since January. My wife and I discussed tonight how we are going to balance our budget. We cannot count on the Homestead Rebate to help out this year. Our property taxes are surely to soar. The preliminary figure was a 15¢ increase. The public is targeting our health benefits since we are public employees. Our daughter’s college fund is being nickeled and dimed with fees. The list goes on.

What has Governor Corzine done to offer relief? He has ensured that I will continue paying the vig on the money he borrowed to build roads for 30 years. He has ensured that every purchase I make will now be taxed at a higher rate. He has cut the rebate I used to receive for owning a home and paying high property taxes. He flat-funded my employer who was forced to eliminate my position.

That’s just six month’s worth of making New Jersey affordable. Just think what the governor will be able to accomplish after four years!

Another plan candidate Corzine had for us was to instill A Prouder New Jersey. Corzine explains:

Like you, I am a proud New Jersey citizen. And part of my motivation to run for Governor is that this state’s reputation is at risk - as a result of repeated episodes of corruption, favoritism and fraud.

I want to restore people’s trust in what should be the people’s government.

We can, and I will, lead this state on the path of honest, open, and effective government.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Yet, today Tom Moran shares how the budget stalemate was resolved.

The reason [he voted for more than a quarter million of pork spending], he says, is that legislators made clear that they would go to war if he used his veto to eliminate more.

“We’d probably still be shut down,” Corzine says. “I took as much risk as I could.”

Sitting behind his desk in the capitol yesterday, Corzine didn’t try to defend it. He promised to reform the process next year.

Does this instill trust in our state government? Does a leader put off until next year what is good for his constituents?

I took as much risk as I could. I. Enough said.

The only people at “risk” were taxpayers and taxpayers are the ones paying the tab for Corzine’s vision for New Jersey - broke, tranished and less affordable.
