NJ Budget: Other Options?

I do not understand.

The Corzine administration has held state funds to Abbott districts flat this year. Really flat. Flat in previous years have included increases. This year’s flat funding has been flat under the traditional sense, even with districts all over the state appealing those decisions.

So flat that that Vineland Public Schools has proposed these cuts. On 14 June, the Vineland Board of Education will vote to accept a budget that includes those cuts.

New Jersey is slashing funds to public schools. Public schools are cutting jobs, field trips, and books. In a budget crisis, these are the kinds of cuts that are made.

When I read the latest AP article about the budget wrangling at the state, all I see are either-or debates. Either we raise the sales tax from six to seven cents or we raise income tax.

Either the taxpayer will pay at the store counter or he will pay through his paycheck.

Why aren’t all agencies being held to the same flat funding that Abbott districts are? The tightening of the belt is slashing the excess spending from Abbott districts. That’s a good thing.

The media are framing the question so as not to entertain spending cuts. It’s working in public education. Why isn’t it considered across the state?
