Albano Not Our Man for Assembly
The Press of Atlantic City ran a story today about New Jersey First District Democrat candidates Jeff Van Drew and Nelson Albano. In it, we the voters learn how why we should not vote for Albano.
After the bill signing, Van Drew approached Albano about a new challenge.
“He said, ‘I want you to start thinking about something,’” Albano recalled. “‘I want you to think about running for Assembly with me.”
Albano said he reacted with reluctance at first, but then thought about the progress made with Michael’s Law.
“I thought, if I could do that on the outside with Jeff, what could I do on the inside with him?” Albano said.
And what would that inside stuff be, Mr. Albano? I am confused as to why Van Drew thought Albano would be a good representative of the citizens of the 1st district. Albano’s claim to fame , as it were, is pressing for Michael’s Law. Michael’s Law increased penalties for third offenses (and beyond) of DWI. While that is a luadable mission, does it indicate a platform on which to run for state office?
The announcement that an Italian guy from Vineland would be running with Van Drew had to catch the attention of the two highest-ranking Republicans in Cumberland County. Vineland is Asselta’s home. It’s also the longtime power base for U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo.
This is far more telling than Michael’s Law. Van Drew, a Democrat, has done surprisingly well in this conservative district. If he is to prosper, however, he needs to secure a second Democrat seat in the 1st District. That has not happened in decades.
What qualifications does Albano have to represent you, dear reader? Or is it that he is Italian and from Vineland?
For me, Albano is a one-issue candidate. That issue is already settled. He has nothing else to offer. If he did, he would have certainly shared it with us. He is also disingenuous. He approached Nick Asselta with the idea of Michael’s Law. Asselta, a Republican, introduced a bill immediately. But because New Jersey is controlled by Democrats, his bill did not get too far. Then Albano recruited Van Drew. As a Democrat, Van Drew was able to get a vote on the bill. Had the Democrats not stymied Asselta’s bill, would Albano have recognized Asselta’s role in the passage of the law?
