Welcome to Mudville
The sneer has fled from Casey’s lip, the teeth are clenched in hate; He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate. And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go, And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey’s blow.
Each evening I read a story to my daughter before she goes to sleep. From the wild tales of Dr. Seuss to the colorful animals of Eric Carle, classics to fantasy, and all sorts of in-between.
But tonight was time for a special tale; that of ol’ Casey. I used to read this to my fourth graders and now my daughter has entered the arena. Baseball is timeless and it is to that which I feel connected.
Little Beetle sat there mesmerized as her Daddy cranked out an old gruff sportscaster’s voice to tell the tale of Mighty Casey. Ernest Lawrence Thayer spun a fabulous tale where we root for heroes, but they do not always come through. Baseball, a sport where one can succeed three out of 10 times and be considered a wonderful player, is beginning tonight. Red Sox-Yankees in the Bronx. I am as happy as my little girl is. Baseball is a passion and it all starts now.
Play ball!
