Cumberland County Democrat Convention
The Cumberland County Democrat Party announced its slate of candidates (most of them, anyhow) last night at their convention in Vineland. The two items of interest out of this convention are:
- Richard Smith, current Vineland Public Schools board member, will run for county freeholder
- Jeff Van Drew (D-1) will announce a running mate for the Assembly today
Smith has proven himself to be an outspoken public official on the contentious VPS School Board. He is direct and seems to desire accountability. That is welcomed. He has not done anything spectacular, however. One would not be able to describe any issue for which he has led. For a three-term member, that is not a record on which to step up on. I desire more from our elected officials.
What is troubling though is that Van Drew will announce the other candidate for the Assembly today. Not at the convention of his constituents. Not providing his party the ability to endorse the candidate themselves at their convention. Not allowing the mystery candidate to announce his candidacy. No, Mr. Van Drew will do it, presumably in front of a bank of microphones and a camera or two.
That is politics as usual.
