How to Decide
The election for the local city commission is 10 May. The 10 candidates for the five positions were announced this week.
- Joe Derella: incumbent
- Dale Finch: Former city commissioner and current board member of the Millville Housing Authority
- Bill Herman: former police chief, currently sits of Millville BOE; left his job at the police department when he was being investigated for wrong-doing; his candidacy is sparking re-newed interest in that investigation
- John Hollingshead: incumbent
- Robert McQuade Jr.: no information; North 6th Street
- James Parent: incumbent
- Jim Quinn: incumbent; mayor
- Ian Roberts: no public service record; EMT and firefighter
- Tim Shannon: incumbent
- Angelo T. Still-Ferrer: no information; Vine Street
There are seven and one-half weeks until the election. What criteria is used to elect local politicians? Millville is very much the good ol’ boys network. I am not connected. I believe the town is moving forward. The downtown is flourishing, which is good. But the concession to Comcast of a 15-year monopoly for the town bothers me. Also, I did not like how the proposed racetrack went down. While I am not necessarily against the project, until there is another pass over the river, this is a project which should not be built.
I just do not see how I am ever going to learn about these candidates. What is done in your town/city to educate the residents about candidates running for office?
