E-ZPass & Highway Gasoline

It looks like the next stage in using E-ZPass will be here soon. New Jersey drivers who use E-ZPass may be able to use the system to purchase gasoline alone the highways of the Garden State.

I certainly have no objection to this. The technology is there, so let's use it.

Will there be an additional monthly fee like there is for the tolls? Will there be a kickback to the state from the oil companies? Will there be an E-ZPass lane at the pumps on the Turnpike? How does New Jersey, the state, benefit from expanding this program? It sounds like there would be a lot more administration/clerical work to keep track of all this. What I do not want to see happen is for E-ZPass customers to be provided a discount. That would be wrong.

For those of us in the southern part of the state, particularly those in Salem and Cumberland Counties, E-ZPass is a luxury which is seldom purchased. We are nearly an hour from the GSP or the Turnpike and our regular course of travel seldom takes us to those roads. But when we do travel them, we are treated like the out-of-staters who have to wait in the lengthy lines at each toll booth. It makes no sense for us to pay for the service as we could easily go a month without ever needing it. And this new proposal would probably not be used by us even if we did have the system. Do normal folks really purchase gasoline on the highway? Usually, it is 10ยข, at least, more per gallon more than it is off the highway.
