Cacheversary
Two years ago today, I found my first cache. I had heard about geocaching on Tuesday, 13 November 2001 from my friend Webfoot. I read a little about GPS units that evening.
On Wednesday, 14 November, I registered with GC.com and began reading in earnest about the game. On Thursday, I drove to Dick’s in Deptford to check out units. I had already determined that I wanted a Megallan at that point. Dick’s only had Garmins. Nevertheless, the salesman demonstrated a Legend (I think, the blue unit) to me. We walked around the parking lot in the dark with it. Pretty cool.
I came back empty-handed and continued to read and investigate.
On Friday I went to the local Sears and purchased a 315. The first waypoint I created was for my lounger.
Surprisingly, there was a cache near me: South Jersey “easyfind #2″. This was right down the road.
On Saturday morning, Gert and I took off for that cache with page in hand. We got to the area and began looking for the road. The traffic was unbelievable as it was the opening of Santa’s Best. We tried to turn around, but were unable to do so. We decided to try another cache.
Back to the apartment to grab a different cache page, Lenape Chief Surprise.
Off we took down Route 55 to 347. We drove into Belleplain. With it being November, there was no one around. We parked near the booth at Lake Nummy. We followed the pointer. Gert was not convinced we would find this. We decided to cross the dried up lake (this was the beginning of the drought). Up the other side and we found a trail. It switched back at some point. We got to the area and began to search. After a few minutes Gert called that she had found it. We were giddy with joy. Yes, we have video of all this.
At one point, I am heard to say This is so cool!
After trading, logging, and taking photographs, we decided to give South Jersey Easy Find another shot. We found the road without trouble this time, parked, and headed toward it. We got to the tressel bridge and Gert refused to cross it. Little did we know then that there is a much more optimal approach. I went ahead and began searching. I searched, I continued. She kept calling to me and I kept asking her to come and help out. Eventually, she got the nerve to cross. We looked a little bit more and finally found it.
I was so juiced from the fun that when we got home I looked online for the next closest cache. I probably promised dinner, I do not recall, but it wasn’t long before we were back in the car heading toward Atlantic City for a beach cache. That, surprisingly, was an easy find for us.
So, two years ago we had our first cache experience, and it was a multiple find day. You know, it is still really cool to go caching!
