I was so looking forward to this show. I had been wanting to see Dylan for some time and had missed (forget why) his run the summer before with Petty.

The night before this show I was hanging out in Wildwood until the early early morn. As we emptied the last bar of the night at 4:00, there was a fight going on across the street. He saw a guy go to his pickup and get a garden hoe. He swung and connected to another guy’s head. We rushed over to help break it up. The girl I was with that night, Marianne O’Leary, cradled the guy’s head who had been hit. Her white blouse was quickly soaked. I rushed to the end of the block to look for the police. Unbelievably, as I got there a car was driving by. I waved them down and explained what happened. They rushed up the one way street the wrong way. Statements were taken, ambulances arrived, and confusion settled in. By the time I arrived home after six in the morninig, I was wired big time. I called the hospital to find out about the guy, but they wouldn’t give up any information to me.

I didn’t sleep much and we left early for the show. JFK was always a mess and today was no different. I don’t recall everyone who was there. I think I went with Marianne and a few others from Cape May, but we met up with Craig and some of his friends there I know. One of those friends had a bad trip and made our day miserable. Really miserable as she just moaned all day long.

I recall the guys who hoisted up a huge cooler up the outside of JFK with their friends on the inside. An unbelievable sight!

I was not impressed with the Dead’s set. It may be because they were the the warm-up band. I think more likely it is that the sound was not right inside the stadium. We were close and perhaps too close to get the correct mix. I have copies of the show and it sounds far better on CD than it did live.

I really enjoyed seeing Dylan, but he was in his slurred voice era and some of the vocals were hard to hear. Seeing Tangled Up in Blue was a delight. It was interesting seeing the Dead as the back-up band. I suppose Dylan is about the only one that could make that happen. :)
